rl@companyoffools.org R.L. Rowsey (Core Company Artist) has spent the last twenty-five years as both an artist and an advocate for the support of local arts organizations. A native of Richmond, Virginia, R.L. began his career as a pianist and conductor. Early days found R.L. filling the position of resident musical director for several successful theatres on the East Coast. It was during this time that R.L. began developing a reputation as a vocal coach, a passion that stays with him today. R.L. also served as the musical director and conductor for many national tours, including productions of Fiddler on the Roof, Singing in the Rain, and Kiss of the Spiderwoman. He also directed several productions in the Richmond and Washington, DC areas, including Oil City Symphony at The Studio Theatre in DC and A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline and The Gifts of the Magi at TheatreVirginia in Richmond. Besides extensive work as a vocal coach, he also held teaching positions with The Studio Conservatory of DC, The Kennedy Center’s Theatre for Young People, and The Columbia School of Theatrical Arts in Columbia, Maryland. During the most recent chapter of R.L.’s career, he has devoted the majority of his time to the administrative side of the arts. He served as the associate artistic director at TheatreVirginia. During his tenure, he oversaw a successful marketing plan, which not only stimulated a new growth in single ticket sales, but also inspired an expanded subscription involvement from the community. He also created several new programs for the Education and Outreach Department, which helped to integrate music and theatre into the mainstream curriculum of Virginia’s schools. He has toured the country as the company manager for national tours of Gypsy and State Fair starring John Davidson. Responsibilities included financial oversight of all aspects of major national tours; the coordination of the artists involvement in a major national sales campaign; travel and housing for all actors, musicians and technicians; payroll; and compliance with all guidelines established by all of the major theatrical unions. For the past three years, R.L. has served as General Manager for NETworks, one of the nation’s leading producers of national tours. During this time, he has General Managed tours of Big, Victor/Victoria starring Toni Tennille, Annie, State Fair, and The Civil War starring Larry Gatlin. | |
